A Continued Pursuit in Love (continued)

A Continued Pursuit in Love

Continuing from last weeks thoughts, how do they square with my earlier advice that you not let certain things build up inside you until you feel an explosion coming on? Very easily. It is up to you to give weight to a situation or circumstance that you perceive to be a conflict. Some things are not worthy of emotional battles or open conflict. Other things that should be addressed need to be addressed in the right time and place, with the right attitude and goal. It is up to you to decide what really matters. Choose your areas for discussion and conflict resolution wisely.

Maintain your poise and composure when you feel hurt, rejected, or maligned by someone. Choose to take control over your attitude and to control the subsequent discussion of the issue with a tone of quietness and positive communication.

My Question For You: Do you keep your composure when you are wronged by someone or do you react without thinking?

My Challenge For You: Consider your attitude the next time you are in a situation that can turn into a conflict and try to determine if it is really worth it.

Austin… What Should Mark and Grace Driscoll know about You?

I talked with Mark this week and he is fired up to be in the Lonestar state on Oct. 2-3.  In fact, I tell him if Seattle was not his home base, Austin is the warm weather version of Seattle.  Both cities are extremely cool, have a great vibe, beautiful and plenty of folks who love Jesus and even more who need Jesus.

Mark and Grace have just spent about three weeks in Greece, Turkey and Israel and have had the opportunity to visit some of the actual places that are mentioned in Song of Solomon.  So, needless to say, they are pumped and more than ready to share their hearts and wisdom with all of us about enjoying this amazing God given relationship called marriage.

So now it is your turn.  What would you like to say to Mark and Grace to let them know more about Austin, H=how you are praying for them, or any cool insights from the coolest city in Texas…

Pastors, Christ, Critics and Praise

I just had an amazing conversation with a courageous young pastor. He said
said that after this summer he is no longer going to try and “endear”
himself to the people by entertaining them or coming up with some new
“gadget” to get their attention. Instead he wanted to teach God’s Word with
excellence and honesty.

Wow, now that is what I call courage and growth. I don’t know if there is
any more difficult role than that of the pastor, the expectation to be
perfect, then finding that the “Real You” falls short of that standard
causes guilt, shame and feelings of hypocrisy.

I have learned over the years after working with very large ministries and
small ones, that every time a pastor opens his mouth he becomes a target, a
bulls-eye. He is inviting people to either say “‘you are the greatest and
you are changing my life’, or ‘I hate you, I can’t believe you believe or
taught this, I can’t stand the music here, I can’t believe you drive that
car, why weren’t you at the hospital for my procedure” – the list is never
ending, the arrows never stop flying.

Generally each and every pastor picks a side to listen to and the results of
that become “I am the greatest” or “I am worthless.”
Neither is a good or correct result.

So, pastors out there, what say you? How have you learned to deal with this
“bar-bell” approach of praise and criticism? Lay person and church member,
how can we stop basing our response to God and His Word on the messenger and
make it about our own journey and our relationship with Him and His Word?
